Is big beautiful?

By now, you will have seen the design for the redevelopment of the ‘Arcadia’ centre in Ealing Broadway, with its 40-storey centrepiece, “The Leaf”.

The plans came out as Ealing seeks to renew itself and keep up with the competing shopping centres, including the new mammoth development in White City.

Much criticism has been levelled at the scheme not only for what the developers call the iconic building, but also about the size of the other buildings just behind it, the lack of enough retail spaces, homes that are affordable to people who want to stay in the borough and the effect on local amenities.

The developers say that this is the best that they can offer, but they must be able to bring more to the table and be more ambitious for Ealing and its residents.

The deadline for the consultation has now passed (25th January) but you can attend a special meeting of the planning committee, which will be discussing the proposal on the evening of Thursday 14th February in the Victoria Hall of Ealing Town Hall.
